The Effect of Constructed Exercise Program on Quality of Life and Depression for Elderly in A Care Facility

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of constructed exercise program on quality of life and depression for elderly in a care facility. This study was conducted elderly in a care facility from August through September, 2009. For this research, 21 elderly were selected for the study. For elderly, a conducted exercise program provided for 2 days a week for six weeks. The data were analyzed using an SPSS 10.0 program for descriptive statistics, Paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, Spearman`s rank correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression analysis. Statistically significant differences were found in changes of quality of life(QOL), depression, self-esteem, dexterity(dominant hand). However, the differences in Seoul-Activities of Daily Living(S-ADL), dexterity(nondominant hand), pain, balance were not statistically significant differences. The QOL and depression, self-esteem and depression showed a negative correlation before and after exercise program, and the QOL and self-esteem showed a positive correlation after exercise program. However, the correlation between the other domains were not significant. In conclusion, the structured exercise program affected quality of life, the level of depression, self-respect, and agility(dominant hand), and short-term structured exercise program was found to be effective for the elderly.
